Born inMoscowin 1946.
After graduation from Moscow Institute of Architecture (MIA) in 1970 he has been working at the Administration of Moscproekt-1 as an architect.
From 1978 to 1981 he has been studying at the postgraduate course and till 1986 he headed the City Environment Design Study Group at theInstitute of Technical Esthetics.
For the following ten years he has been practicing as a freelance architect, artist and exhibition designer. He has been supervising and designing the Moscow Architectural Advance Guard exhibition at Chicago Art Institute (1994). As an artist, he participated in the Venice Biennale in 1995.
In 1994 he founded an independent design and study group Architectural Laboratory.
In 1997 he opened its own design agency «architectsasse» (till 2003 "architects ask"). He was awarded the Golden Section prize in 1999. He authored numerous projects and buildings in Moscow and Greater Moscow Area.
Since 1973 he has been dealing with architectural theory and criticism, giving lectures and reading articles in Russia and abroad.
As an invited critic, he’s been continuously cooperating with the Faculty of Architecture in Deft,Academy of Architecture in Mendrizio, Technical Universityin Zurichand other leading architectural schools.
Since 1989 he’s been giving lectures in MIA as a professor (since 1995), and supervises the Workshop of Experimental Exercise Design from 2002 to 2012.
For ten years (from 1996 to 2006) he’s been the First Vice President of the Association of Moscow Architects.
Since 2002 till presently he has been the member of the European Cultural Parliament.
From 2004 to 2006 he’s been the art director of the Russian Pavilion at the Architectural Biennale inVenice.
In 2012 he founded and chaired the Moscow Architectural School MAS (MARSH).
